Coach Signature Summer Fragrance 2014

2015-03-09 12.29.04 (2)Coach Signature Summer Fragrance 2014 (Coach 2014) is a sugar-coated, cool, endearing fragrance.  It’s aquatic, and somehow manages to also smell a bit like the inside of a new leather handbag.  I’m not sure what olfactory magic is being played with the vanilla orchid, water lily, and peony but it’s very nice.

Coach Signature Summer Fragrance 2014 is smart, vibrant, and definitely made for summer.  It’s sunny but wistful too… Sillage and longevity are moderate.

Notes: vanilla orchid, water lily, and peony.

My husband has requested some sort of soup for Father’s Day.  His ideal is to find all the ingredients for his special dinner at the Farmer’s Market.  It’s a very nice idea and I like it but I hope it’ll be possible.  I also hope it’ll taste good.  We shall see…  I’ll do my best.

As I’m writing this a commercial for the Olive Garden is on television.  It kind of makes me want to find a good Italian recipe for soup.  Hmm…

I ran a lot the other day (for me) and it felt good.  Also, I’ve been writing a lot of letters lately and it’s been interesting how different that is mentally than writing on a computer. I find it’s easier to be emotionally present when I’m writing things by hand.  Maybe people should keep a journal in an actual notebook, not just to “process thoughts” as the cliché goes but to process them in a specific way.

Anyhow, have a lovely Saturday.  🙂

Poppy Blossom

I was in the mood for something bright and fresh so I decided to try Coach Poppy Blossom. Even though it’s not a really a winter fragrance, I had an intuitive sense that it would be what I was looking for and I was right.

At first spray (at least on my skin) Coach Poppy Blossom (Coach 2012) smells a little too sweet, a bit cheap and has this certain chemical quality, but give it a couple of moments and it becomes kinda fabulous

It’s airy, sharp (in a clear, fresh way) floral, cheery and delightfully gourmand.  I like it a lot.

Top notes are listed as: lychee, strawberry (I love strawberry notes), freesia, and mandarin orange.  Middle notes are: lily-of-the-valley, rose, tuberose, gardenia, and jasmine sambac.  Base notes are: praline, vanilla, woody notes and musk.

I think the wood notes, combined with the musk add a bit of depth to a pretty sweet smelling fragrance, and perhaps the use of strawberry, mandarin orange and lychee adds a light, sparkling quality.  In any case, it definitely improves my opinion of gourmands.  And, as an aside, my opinion of contemporary gourmands has been slowly changing bit by bit these last few months anyway…

Yesterday I tried vintage pin curl clips I found on Etsy.  They’re called Lady Ellen Klippies. I think they’re probably from the late 1940’s or early 50’s?

I followed the directions on the back and…

Klippies out (sans makeup)

There were curls, curls everywhere going in every direction.  It certainly looked less than perfect, but the curls the clips created were pretty and I think if I tried it again that I might be able to make it work…

I did have a much better outcome with the chocolate cake though…  Well, at least the cake turned out better than the other one I made this week. I did get raw egg all over the kitchen and had to spend a long time cleaning afterwards, so it wasn’t a totally impeccable experience.

I used a recipe for chocolate cake with chocolate frosting from an old cookbook called, French Provincial Cooking, by Elizabeth David. I’m quite pleased with it – I’ve never had a recipe “go wrong” when using this book…

This has been a slightly odd week actually.  It’s gone by unbelievably fast for one thing.  And then there has been this strange mixture of things going unusually well – things that never go that well normally – and moments where I keep making these silly mistakes.  Yesterday I broke three or four glass things in the refrigerator when I was reaching for another jar, and then there were the egg issues, there was the cake mistake earlier in the week, and since I’ve been losing weight lately my jeans were falling off of me during the morning but the other pair I found to try later starting making my feet tingle from lack of circulation (I finally found a pair of the right size).

Anyway, I’m looking forward to this weekend…  How about you?
