Lacey’s maternal grandfather who raised her was…wild. He valued hard work but he was also…unpredictable and a romantic in genre. Harper Lee captured the southern aesthetic as did Margaret Mitchell. Combine that aesthetic with old money and in the American south old money is…rebellious, shifty, lofty and after the Civil War secretly very melancholy.

An Old Yankee obviously isn’t a southerner. And old money can exist outside of New England if it’s really a sociological phenomenon.
