God: Lacey? Do you understand?
Lacey: Just barely. If at all.
*later*
Lacey: Did he just live to be a mean girl?
God: No.
They really were insecure.
And they still are. They cover well, but they’re very insecure people.
*later*
God: Lacey!
They were insecure!
*later*
God: They were…deeply insecure.
They were not…able to see the truth. They still are.
Lacey: Am I supposed to know this!?
God: Yes.
Lacey: Then I’m done.
It’s too sick.
*later*
God: Do you…think it’s meaningless?
Lacey: Yes.
It seems like an imaginary ailment. Designed just as an excuse to be a complete loser to people.
God: I’m sure they are.
I’m sure they’re insecure. And no, it’s not imaginary.
You’d be surprised.
Lacey: WHY…IS THIS MY PROBLEM!?!!
WHY!!!! *she yells at God*
It makes me want to rip things apart. Out of absolute frustration. At this point in my life.
I have no more patience!
God: It actually is far more prevalent in America.
Is that part of what bothers you, right now?
Lacey: Yes!
It’s absurd!
It’s a made-up disease!
I’m sorry! …That’s what’s stuck in my head.
God: Yes, I know what you mean. But…it’s not actually imaginary.
They’re actually suffering.
Lacey: From what? Bullshit Syndrome?!
They’re too full of nonsense to understand their own humanity!?
God: Actually, you’re not wrong, in a way.
But they’re genuinely confused. It’s not imaginary.
They have a very poor sense of their own worth. They hate themselves, somewhat. For sad reasons.
A hater: So she has no sense of self!?
God: Where are you coming from with that one?
A hater: She’s actually just talking about herself?
God: No!
You’re projecting.
This is real.
A hater: No one can be this confused? Or is she just dumb!?
God: No, she’s not dumb. And yes, they can.
*later*
God: They’re insecure, Lacey.
*he laughs*
They’re incredibly sad.
NO! They really are!
Lacey: *rolls her eyes*
That does not match-up with how they act!
God: But that’s how they’re actually feeling.
Lacey: *rolls her eyes*
Yeah right!
God: No! They really are!
Lacey: Would they be any better if they got their head on straight? Does this “insecurity” anything?
God: Yes.
They’d be nicer. To everyone.
Lacey: Why?
God: Because they’re not in touch with reality. They’re living in a world where people don’t want them. Because they’re not good enough to exist.
Lacey: Ha! That’s insane.
God: Yes. But that’s what they experience, at times.
This isn’t going well. You weren’t supposed to even be having this conversation. But someone decided you needed it. Because they’re evil and quite stupid.
Lacey: Me!?
God: No.
Do you at all understand?
Lacey: Maybe.
It just so preposterous!
Adult people who are so dumb? How could anyone be that worthless? For absolutely no legitimate reason? It’s insane.
God: Yes! But that’s how they feel. They just have that idea. And they have a very hard time with the opposite problem you’re having right now.
An American woman: I want to hate her. But I’m starting to believe.
We just…can’t-
It like when you get an idea stuck in your head. Like what you’re experiencing right now.
Lacey: But what even is the idea!?
An American woman: That I’m dumb.
Not like…actually dumb. Like…dumb.
Lacey: Where’d you get that idea?
An American woman: As a kid.
Lacey: You were probably just misunderstood.
An American woman: *thinks*
Lacey: I mean, are you actually dumb?
An American woman: No.
Lacey: Then it’s obviously just rubbish.
You know?
An American woman: I can’t get it out of my head.
Lacey: You’ve tried?
An American woman: Yes!
Lacey: So it’s like the hiccups?
An American woman: Yes, I guess.
*she laughs*
Lacey: I hope you have some grasp of that!?
An American woman: Some!
I’m fairly successful.
Lacey: Are you a pilot?
An American woman: Yes! But don’t worry, I have a wife. And you’re straight.
But…it’s just there. I can’t shake it.
Lacey: *thinks*
So you really can’t get rid of it?
An American woman: No.
*she shrugs*
I mean…it’s just-
I feel…like it’s always going to be there.
Lacey: I don’t understand. But I’m sorry.
God: It just seems like insanity?
Lacey: Yes.
God: Okay. Well…they’re insecure.
And…they’re desperate to seem superior. Because, to them, that’s all they can do. If they don’t meet the requirements for the job…they’re going to be failures.
Lacey: But they assume they’ve won. Right?
God: No.
They assume they’re competent. At best.
Lacey: –
God: At best!
Lacey: I can’t get over how dumb this is.
God: Well, previous generations were less unhealthy. But, it’s always been in American culture.
Lacey: Are you trying to punish me with this!?
God: No. You need to understand, though.
Lacey: I barely do.
God: So…they have-
They have malice towards you, because you’ve triggered their hatred for themselves.
Lacey: *thinks*
Is there anything I can do?
God: No.
You didn’t mean to do that.
Lacey: Crud.
I hate my generation. And I love it.
But…I mostly wish I’d been born far earlier…
God: It is unbearably lonely for you.
Lacey: I don’t…understand…so many things!
It’s incredibly frustrating.
I don’t hate them. I just hate…how…cold everyone always is. So cold. So…distant.
God: Go on?
Lacey: Cold, emotionally almost nonexistent…totally disinterested…absent…dull…passionless…-
Basically robotic.
God: That’s not how they experience each other. And you’re supposed to be a part of that.
How do you experience Generation X?
Lacey: Much more human. Warmer. …More caring. ….More willing to be vulnerable.
But still…cold, compared to previous generations.
God: What about the Boomers?
Lacey: Oh!
I see their flaws…but they’re…alive.
Warmer, much warmer, than-
A Gen. X woman: What if you think of us as your grandkids?!
Lacey: *thinks*
Then they just seem…smart. And cute.
And…my grandkids would be…warm, once you get to know them.
Lem: Yes!
What about Millennials? As great grandkids?
Lacey: That also makes more sense.
Oh well.
Lem: So they just seem…cold?
Lacey: Yes. Cold as ice.
They always have…
